Founder of the bovine breed

"By 1830, the Maine-Anjou breed has become the result of continous crossbreedings between the DURHAM and LE MANS breed. The present breed has been fixed by the reproduction of crossbred animals. The Maine-Anjou breed acquired its rusticity, temperateness and its predisposition to get fat from the LE MANS breed where as the DURHAM breed brought them its precociousness."

Mr Quittet - Inspector in agriculture

This crossbreed is the fruit of men's research, i.e. the landlords of big agrarian lands which were farmed by sharecroppers.

The DURHAM bulls were imported to improve the profitability of their lands and their sharecroppers' life conditions. The first bull - called VENDREDI (Friday) - was imported in 1850 by Earl de Falloux.

Olivier de Rougé, founded the stock breeders society of Maine-Anjou, on january, 9th. These physiocrats popularized their knowledge thanks to many exemplary farms.

The farm of Château des Rues, created by olivier de Rougé, is in a way the birthplace of the Maine-Anjou breed.
